Course Outline

ECDIS Operational Functions

Sperry Marine offers a USCG approved five-day training course in the operational use of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS). The course syllabus has been developed using IMO model course 1.27 in order to comply with STCW 95 standards. In addition to covering all IMO required subject areas for VMS-ECDIS, the course also provides detailed instruction in the Automatic Navigation and Track-keeping Systems (ANTS) and using the interface between the radar and the VMS-ECDIS. This makes it an ideal couse for any officer who will be operating this equipment on a vessel equipped with Sperry Marine products.

ECDIS Operator Training increases the officer's ability to use the system effectively and achieve the maximum benefit in terms of safer navigation.

MAINTENANCE TRAINING

For Maintenance training in the classroom actual working equipment is used to expose the technicians to the physical components they will work with on the vessel. Each student must complete several troubleshooting exercises where faults are introduced into the equipment that they must then diagnose and repair.

US NAVY TRAINING

To take full advantage of our training facilities, we have created complimentary STCW 95 certified courses. We have been teaching our STCW 95 certified ECDIS-N course to the US Navy since 2001.This course has been re-certified by the USCG three times and is currently certified until 2010.This ability to merge the best of commercial and military practices is highlighted by our curriculum development process. This process allows us to combine the Terminal and Enabling Objective training approach of the US Navy with the requirements of International Maritime Organization (IMO) to develop courses tailor made for US Navy sailors while still fulfilling STCW 95 requirements. This approach directly lends itself to the Navy’s Navigation, Seamanship and Shiphandling (NSS) Training Requirements Document (TDR) approved by VADM LaFleur CNSF in 2002.

Just as importantly as the above certifications, our instructors are widely recognized as the premier subject matter experts in their fields. From a WSN-7 to an ECDIS-N system, our instructors have the advantage of having constant access to not only the sailors in the fleet, but also the hardware, software and system engineers that develop and evolve Sperry Marine products. This allows our instructors to develop unprecedented knowledge of the inner workings of US Navy IBS while focusing that knowledge on the critical areas highlighted by our extensive underway training. This blend of product and fleet knowledge is a key reason why our instructors are recognized as the best in the industry and are routinely used by the US Navy and other premier organizations for critical training events and train-the-trainer evolutions.
